With basic tattooing the skin loses about 30% of the applied ink. We replace the lost amount and add a little extra to punch up the contrast with a faster and lighter second layer. Black can be darker, color can be brighter, fades can be smoother and most definitely lines can be crisper!
When we add this second layer we also now have access to high quality visual tricks and effects that add stunning quality.
It all begins with planning the improvement into the art stage of creating the tattoo.
DO THE MATH
Here’s the what the numbers tell us. When any tattoo is applied and has had a solid pass of coloring/ink it will lose a percentage that ink in the healing. Even if that first pass is done perfectly it will still only be about 60% of the total capacity of what is visually and noticeably possible to achieve.
Now when that first pass heals it will also lose some percentage of that ink.. On average 30% of the ink is lost in the healing, that is 30% of the only partially full (60%) capacity. With excellent technique and good healing practices we can improve that by about 15% but in the end it is still is only about 75% of that first pass amount before healing, and even if ink loss during healing didn’t exist it would still fall short of full visual capacity.
That capacity would be somewhere between 150% and 200% compared to the previously mentioned numbers of 60%-75% in a basic or standard tattoo. This is why some tattoos seem to crumble away so much faster than others.
This ‘full capacity’ means the darkest possible black, or brightest possible colors that can be done. With this ‘full capacity’ amount reached when the skin naturally degrades and dissolves the ink particles due to aging it has at least double the resistance, not to mention look remarkably better for the whole mean time.

The most efficient way of achieving full capacity for your tattoo is to add an additional layer. But that’s not all it does!. There are dozens of textures, patterns and effects that don’t often get used in tattooing due to the lack of longevity. They just don’t stay looking like they first did when fresh so responsible tattooers will usually design their art around these effect. Now, with this layering method and added contrast and saturation these effects stay incredibly well.
